Terracing at base level on the west (front) facade. This masonry is a mixture of original and restoration work. Note the straight lines and sharp corners. The apron insets (horizontal slots) are very low down on each terrace (almost hidden in the grass at the bottom). These are characteristics of Late Classic architecture at Tikal. The outsets next to the stair have superior and basal moldings rather than apron moldings. This change probably reflects iconographic significance that would have been well known to the specialists who used the temple. In some temples mask panels were placed next to stairs. Here an architectural form is used instead of an figural image. All these surfaces originally were covered with thin white polished plaster. |
