The horizontal level seen here is a terrace level and could be followed easily all the way through. Some inner core walls can be seen clearly. The inner bulk of the pyramid had been assembled very systematically, one terrace level at a time. The outer material that formed the finished shapes of the terracing was then placed after this inner core had been built. Some masons may have been finishing terrace facings as others assembled core material on the next higher level. A large number of work crews could have been working at the same time.
